Among closed-cell and open-cell foam, there are many variations we are familiar with in our everyday lives. We’ll outline a few popular types below, along with some of their applications.

Common Types of Closed-Cell Foam

Neoprene Foam — A soft, flexible, and highly durable sponge rubber, neoprene foam offers excellent thermal and moisture insulation, and is resistant to Ozone, sunlight, and oxidation, as well as many chemicals and petroleum derivatives. Neoprene has a unique molecular structure that renders it resistant to breakdown by water and air. As such, it is commonly used in athletic equipment like gloves, wetsuits, and knee pads.

Crosslinked Polyolefins — A strong and resilient foam commonly used in shock-absorbing products, polyethylene makes for an excellent packing material. Its strength lends it to packaging applications for items that will travel long distances or may not be handled with care during transport. Polyethylene foam is shatterproof, non-dusting, flexible, impervious to mold, mildew, rot, and bacteria, and is available in various densities to match the demands of different applications.

Other examples of closed-cell foam rubber include gym rubber, which makes excellent activity flooring, and cross-linked polyethylene, a carvable material popular in outdoor and marine applications.

Physical Properties

  • Outstanding sound absorption
  • Excellent shock absorption
  • High strength-to-weight ratio
  • Superior insulation against heat and cold
  • Exceptional Flotation

Available in conductive, non-conductive and fire-retardant versions, Durafoam contains co CFC’s or HCFC’s. It’s also ROHS compliant and 100% recyclable.
